Eat Like a Caveman: The Paleo Diet

We live in an era of information overload, especially surrounding nutrition. I personally have been overwhelmed and confused about food for most of my life. At times I thought I had the answer, after having followed a certain diet for months and months, only to be defeated by feeling sick and malnourished.

I’ve tried The South Beach Diet, the vegan Thrive Diet, a basic whole foods organic diet, and a raw fruitarian-vegan diet

After feeling highly unstable on my six month fruit kick, I began following a Paleo diet. Though it is just about the fourth month in, I can say that I feel the healthiest, most satisfied and grounded than ever in my entire life. I feel like my body is working better than it did ten years ago.

So what is this “Paleo” thing all about, and why should we bother?

It is essentially a low carb diet including lots of quality fat and protein. The theory is that humans do not actually need dietary carbohydrates. Any carbohydrate the body may require can be synthesized from fat and protein. Rather than carbs for energy, experts claim that our bodies prefer ketones: energy producing by-products from fat metabolism.

My Paleo Diet Experience: Dealing with Diet Cheating

My Paleo Diet Experience: Dealing with Diet Cheating – Blogcritics Tastes.

So this really bothered me. The guy writes about “cheating”. What the heck is that about? How do you “cheat” on a lifestyle? Paleo is NOT a diet. It is a way of life. Part of this way of life, for me, is eating something if I want to. For example, on vacation I eat mexican food. Tacos, chips, enchiladas… Am I cheating? Absolutely not. That is my lifestyle. I am disciplined and part of that discipline HAS to include unstringing the bow and eating what I want from time to time.

Mark Sisson recommends an 80/20 approach. Would that mean that you are “cheating” 20 percent of the time? Come on… Of course not. It means that you have adopted an 80/20 lifestyle. That is who you are. Period.

The problem is that when we label something with such a harsh word as “cheating” then we set ourselves up for personal guilt, remorse, and self-loathing. That isn’t a healthy part of anyone’s life.

I’ve lost another 20 lbs over the past 4 months. 3 of those weeks I didn’t even worry about what I ate–why? Because my lifestyle dictates that when I am on vacation I don’t get bent out of shape about what I eat. Do I feel guilty about it? Of course not. It’s my chosen lifestyle. I’ll be at Lake Powell for 5 days again next week. And guess what? I’ll eat what the family is eating. No worries, no remorse.
